Anne Beck

2017

Anne Beck is an artist, curator, educator, and hand papermaker. She works collaboratively & independently in a wide variety of media from painting & quilting to print & book making to public intervention.

 

Anne is a core member of The Printmakers Left, an international collective working in interdisciplinary arts. TPL’s most recent book project The Hinterlands debuted at Codex VI in Berkeley, CA in February 2017. She is half of the collaborative team behind The Rhinoceros Project – exploring the communal & revolutionary power of sewing circles & hand papermaking. Recent sewing circles have been held at San Francisco Center for the Book & Ramon’s Tailor in San Francisco, CA, and Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA.

 

Anne’s work has been featured in In the Make, Studio Visits with West Coast Artists, Works & Days Quarterly, Hyperallergic, and Dublin’s The Visual Artists News Sheet. She has received residency awards from the Virginia Center of Creative Arts, Can Serrat in El Bruc, Spain, Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany, and was Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Anne is a 2015 recipient of the Fath Scholarship for Artists and Artisans of the Book from the Rare Book School in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a project grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. In 2017, she {as The Rhinoceros Project} was awarded a project grant from Puffin Foundation West.

 

 

Anne lives & works in Northern California where she is head landlooker at The Landlooker Society. Prior to this she co-founded Lost Coast Culture Machine, a contemporary art space & handmade paper mill focusing on interdisciplinary & sustainable creative practice. LCCM was featured in The New York Times, 36 Hours, 150 Weekends in the USA & Canada & the West’s Best Beach Towns in Via Magazine.

 

Anne holds an MFA in two-dimensional practice from Pratt Institute & a BA in printmaking & art history from the University of Virginia and is currently a member of the art & art history faculty at Mendocino College.
